Diagnosing Before Acting

The Visible Problem Is Not Always the Real Problem

Ecological management often begins with a visible symptom:

  • A weed infestation

  • A decline in native species

  • Habitat degradation

  • Erosion

  • Reduced recruitment

However, visible outcomes are often the final result of processes operating elsewhere within the system.

The observed problem may not be the process producing it.

Looking Beyond Symptoms

A weed may be supported by:

  • Disturbance pathways

  • Faunal vectors

  • Seedbanks

  • Habitat modification

  • Historical land use

  • Other introduced species

Removing the symptom may leave the underlying process unchanged.

Diagnosis Before Treatment

The M.O.L.D. framework places diagnosis before intervention.

Key questions include:

  • What pathways are producing the outcome?

  • Which disturbances support those pathways?

  • What ecological functions remain intact?

  • What relationships are maintaining persistence?

  • Which interventions address cause rather than symptom?

Why This Matters

Actions taken without diagnosis may:

  • Increase disturbance

  • Strengthen recruitment pathways

  • Trigger reinvasion

  • Disrupt functioning ecological relationships

  • Increase future management requirements

Well-targeted actions can often influence multiple pathways simultaneously.

The M.O.L.D. Principle

Intervention should be guided by an understanding of system condition rather than assumptions about system behaviour.

The question is not simply:

What action can be taken?

but:

What condition is producing the observed outcome?

Better Decisions Through Better Diagnosis

The more accurately a system is understood, the more effectively intervention can be directed.

Diagnosis does not remove uncertainty.

It reduces the likelihood of treating symptoms while leaving causes unchanged.
